In form Saturday 1st XI inserted Horsmonden to bat first at the Green. Opener Rayment held the innings together with a fine century as the visitors posted a competitive total of 219-8 in their 40 overs. Andy Powney was the pick of the bowlers taking 5-24 from his 9 overs. Meopham appeared to be cruising to victory with a great platform set by Powney (38), Kevin Smith (25) and a superb knock from Adam Orridge (90), but from 140-1 wickets started to fall on a regular basis. With the Bruce brothers the last pair at the crease, 7 runs were needed from the final two balls of the 40th over. George Bruce clubbed both deliveries for 4 runs to secure a memorable victory, and take the 1st XI into joint second place.
The 2nd XI played at the delightful setting of Chevening Amblers, winning the toss and batting first, Meopham were once again indebted to Gavin Tovey (66) and Mick Clark (83) who are both in top form. Meopham closed on 229-7. Chevening started really well and skipper Mark Challis hit a fine 70 as 122 was added for the first wicket. Once the first wicket fell, others began to fall regularly as the run rate grew. Harry Tompkins bowled a fine spell with no luck, Matthew Ward picked up two important wickets, but it was left to 14 year old Max Luckett playing his second league game for the club, who returned figures of 5-23 from 8 overs. The final winning margin was 52 runs as Meopham 2nd XI go top of Division 5.
Another good day at the office....!
