The 1st XI entertained Sissinghurst at the Green, the 2nd XI made the journey in the other direction.
After the loss of 3 early wickets, the 1st XI were partly rescued by Andy Powney and Rupert Davenport (35), Glynn Fortt (14) was the only other player to get into double figures and the team were heavily indebted to Powney who hit a superb 104 in a total of 202 all out. Note that this 104 was out of 168 runs scored off the bat during the innings.
In reply, Sissinghurst lost 5 early wickets to that man Powney, but were steadied by Jon Agar and Neal Metcalf before more wickets tumbled and Meopham seemed odds on to pick up the 20 points when the 9th wicket was taken with the score on 172. Meopham then spurned some catching opportunities and Sissinghurst edged home in the 39th over. Powney must have been a strong contender for MoTM after bowling 9 overs and taking 5 for 11.....!!
The 2nd XI batted first, and made steady progress thanks to Darren Deeks, George Tompkins and Mick Clark before a middle order wobble put the home side on top. A late partnership from Dan Plumb and Matt Bruce yielded 27 runs and Meopham posted 183-7 from their 40 overs. Clark top scoring with 42. Sissinghurst flew out of the traps and at drinks seemed well on course for victory. Key catches were held and the away team gradually got a grip through excellent bowling from Jack Fox and debutant Adam Colegate. Sissinghurst batted deep, but the final catch was held and a narrow 9 run was secured.
Two great games of cricket!
